Die Nebel von Avalon kann mittlerweile als Klassiker des Fantasy-Genres bezeichnet werden. Seit Mitte der 80er-Jahre begeistert Marion Zimmer Bradleys Roman, der die altbekannte Artuslegende aus der Sicht der Frauen erzählt, Millionen und so war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis diese Geschichte ihren Weg auf die Leinwand bzw. den Bildschirm fand. Um dem opulenten Fernseh-Mehrteiler eine stimmungsvolle musikalische Untermalung zu geben, wurde Lee Holdridge engagiert. Obwohl dieser seit den 70er-Jahren zu mehr als hundert zumeist TV-Produktionen den Soundtrack beigesteuert hat, blieb ihm der große Durchbruch bisher versagt. Doch mit den Mists of Avalon schafft er ein imposantes Klanggemälde, das diese Tatsache möglicherweise bald ändern könnte.
Eine epische Geschichte fordert einen epischen Soundtrack. Dass es sich hierbei lediglich um einen TV-Soundtrack handelt, fällt dabei in keiner Minute auf. Volle Streicherpassagen schaffen einen durchweg melodischen und gefühlvollen Hintergrund. Der wird jedoch durchbrochen von schweren Bläsern und Percussions, die eindrucksvoll die Actionszenen untermalen. Und wie es sich für ein Spektakel aus dem mittelalterlichen Britannien gehört, dürfen natürlich keltisch anmutende Passagen nicht fehlen. Seinen Höhepunkt erreicht der Score, wenn Chor und Solostimme ihren Auftritt bekommen und der Musik einen Ausdruck tiefster Melancholie und Tragik verleihen. Eingerahmt wird der Score von zwei Songs, “The Mystic Dream” von Loreena McKennitt sowie “I Will Remember You Still” von Aeone, der die Themen des Films noch einmal aufgreift, fügen sich mit ihrem New-Age-Feeling ungewöhnlich stimmungsvoll in den Score ein. –Winfried Prokert

Director Ulrich Edel’s miniseries adaptation of Marion Zimmer Bradley’s bestseller turns the Camelot fable inside out, examining the drama and moral lessons from the perspective of its female characters. Composer Lee Holdridge was thus presented with the challenge of not only reinventing the genre’s hoary clichés yet again, but imbuing them with the perspective of the powerful women behind the throne as well. By turns airy and ominous, Loreena McKennitt’s ambitiously pagan mini-epic “The Mystic’s Dream” essentially shows the way, neatly segueing into Holdridge’s initially quiet strains in a way that’s increasingly rare among such hybrid efforts. The veteran composer takes that magical introduction and deftly gives it flesh and blood, the bucolic harps, strings, and woodwinds punctuated by brass, percussion, and foreboding choral flourishes. It’s a score of impressive range and mature character, from the largely pastoral “Morgaine’s Journey” through passages of mystery and medieval folk tonalities to the thundering percussive passages of “The Cave Ceremony” and the inherent drama of “Mordred Confronts Arthur/The Battle Ends.” “I Will Remember You Still,” Holdridge’s ethereal collaboration with Aeone, brings the album full circle and serves as a worthy bookend to McKennitt’s memorable prelude. –Jerry McCulley (amazon.com)
