Depuis quelques années, le nombre d’âmes reçues à l’examen d’entrée au paradis ne cesse de diminuer, tout le contraire de ce qui se passe en enfer, où on commence à manquer de place à cause de l’arrivée incessante de nouveaux pensionnaires. Déprimés et angoissés, les gardiens du paradis reçoivent une requête de la part d’une mère qui leur demande de sauver l’âme de son fils, Many Chaves, un boxeur au passé turbulent. Ils envoient alors sur Terre un de leurs agents les plus doués, Lola Nevado. Celle-ci se fait passer pour la femme du boxeur et tente de remettre Many dans le droit chemin. Cependant, les services de renseignement de l’enfer détectent immédiatement la présence de Lola sur Terre. Pour contrecarrer ses plans, ils envoient sur place un agent à la longue expérience, Carmen Ramos. Cette dernière prétend être la cousine germaine de Many et parvient à s’introduire chez lui.

La última década ha sido funesta para los intereses del Cielo. Sus dirigentes están más que preocupados puesto que en los últimos años el número de almas que ha pasado los exámenes de entrada es prácticamente inexistente. Todo lo contrario de lo que ocurre en el infierno, donde la avalancha de nuevos internos les empieza a crear problemas de espacio. La batalla entre el bien y el mal parece haberla ganado definitivamente el infierno. Pero justo cuando los dirigentes del cielo, deprimidos y angustiados, están a punto de tirar la toalla reciben una petición: una madre les pide que intenten salvar el alma de su hijo, Many Chaves, un boxeador con un pasado más que turbulento. Los dirigentes del cielo se agarran desesperadamente a esta oportunidad y mandan a la tierra a uno de sus ángeles más capacitados, Lola Nevado. Lola, haciéndose pasar por la mujer del boxeador, intentará llevar el alma de Many a su terreno. Pero los servicios de información del infierno detectan inmediatamente la presencia de Lola en la tierra y para contrarrestar sus acciones envían a un agente de campo de gran experiencia, Carmen Ramos. Two angels, one from heaven, Lola (Abril) and the other from hell, Carmen (Cruz), come to earth vying for the soul of a boxer with a life-threatening injury. While Lola tries to show him the benefits of heaven, Carmen temps him with seductive visions of hell, which may not be so bad after all.

In Heaven, big time boss Marina D’Angelo (Fanny Ardant) pulls nightclub singer Angel Lola (Victoria Abril) out of retirement for an important mission to Earth to save the soul of misogynistic boxer and thug, Many (Demián Bichir). It seems that Heaven is losing the battle with Hell, and Many’s soul may make all the difference. When the news reaches Hell, Operations Manager Jack Davenport (Gael García Bernal, speaking English) orders Carmen (Penélope Cruz), a waitress in Hell, to get a hold of Many’s soul, quick smart. Heaven is Paris in the
1930s, shot in black and white, a sophisticated place where everyone speaks French, Hell is a red-soaked, US-style sweatshop where everyone speaks English and is trying to climb the corporate ladder, while Earth is Spanish-speaking. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Many is told by doctors that he’s in danger of dying if he fights again. Enter Lola as his estranged wife and Carmen as his long-lost cousin. While Lola tries to move Many to sacrifice, Carmen appeals to his materialistic inclinations…the battle is on.
