A la fin du XIXème siècle, dans le Paris de la Belle Epoque, Christian (Ewan McGregor ; Trainspotting), jeune poète désargenté, s’installe dans le quartier de Montmartre. Il découvre un univers où se mêlent sexe, drogue et french cancan, mais se rebelle contre ce milieu décadent en menant une vie de bohème. Il fait alors la connaissance du peintre Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo ; Spawn) et est embauché pour rédiger le livret d’une revue. C’est là qu’il tombe amoureux de la courtisane Satin (Nicole Kidman ; Eyes Wide Shut), une meneuse de revue star du Moulin Rouge également convoitée par le Duc (Richard Roxburgh ; Mission : Impossible 2), aristocrate aisé qui assure le financement du projet.
Christian, a young wannabe Bohemian poet living in 1899 Paris, defies his father by joining the colorfully diverse clique inhabiting the dark, fantastical underworld of Paris’ now legendary Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and newly-discovered electricity, the poet-innocent finds himself plunged into a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair with Satine, the club’s highest paid star and the city’s most famous courtesan. Their romance is played out against the infamous club - a meeting place of high life and low, where slumming aristocrats and the fashionably rich mingled with workers, artists, Bohemians, actresses and courtesans.
