Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music, and emerged in the early-1950’s.
The term “rockabilly” is a portmanteau of “rock,” from rock and roll, and “hillbilly”, the latter a reference to the country music (often called “hillbilly music” in the 1940s and ’50s) that contributed strongly to the style’s development. Other important influences on rockabilly include Western Swing, blues music, boogie woogie, and Jump blues. Although there are notable exceptions, its origins lie primarily in the Southern USA.

When Rockabilly Ruled.. OK? - BBC Radio 2 Feature

Mark Radcliffe looks back 30 years to the second rock n roll revolution to hit the UK…. the 1970s rockabilly.

Twenty years after Bill Haley and Elvis first appeared, a new rock ‘n’ roll scene was bubbling under in the UK clubs.
The scene developed around rare American rockabilly records from the 1950s, that had never before been issued in Britain.
Names like Charlie Feathers, Mac Curtis and Billy Lee Riley were revered amongst the fans, but unknown to the general public.
This programme tells how the music leapt out of the rock ‘n’ roll underground and became the hottest new cult in pop music.
The major record labels were quick to embrace the burgeoning scene. Long-lost tracks were released for the first time in the UK and A and R men signed a whole raft of new rockabilly bands.
We hear interviews from rockabilly hit-makers including Matchbox, The Jets and The Polecats, as well as BBC archive sessions.
