HIM is a rock band from Finland formed in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko Lindström, and bassist Mikko Paananen. They have released six full length albums to date. As of 2008, they are the first and only Finnish band to go Gold in the United States.

HIM is a rock band from Finland formed in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko Lindström, and bassist Mikko Paananen. They have released six full length albums to date. As of 2008, they are the first and only Finnish band to go Gold in the United States.

HIM’s genre is debated in some circles; their musical style is often referred to as “love metal” by Valo and by the group’s fans. Musically the band mix influences from hard rock and early heavy metal. Ville Valo has stated that the band started as a “Black Sabbath tribute band of sorts”. Valo stated in an interview on the Love Metal Archives Vol. I DVD, that he was fed up with journalists and interviewers asking him (Valo), and the rest of the band what the genre of HIM was. He said in answer to that question, they created the genre entitled “love metal” (which was also the name of their 2003 album.) Critics commonly refer to them as alternative rock, gothic rock, or gothic metal. However, their musical style varies between albums, and even between songs.

Album Review:
Razorblade Romance is the second studio album by HIM, released on December 19, 1999 in Finland and January 24, 2000 in rest of Europe - save for the UK, where it was released May 15 2000. It was produced by John Fryer and distributed by the local BMG company. All songs and lyrics on the album, with the exception of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game, are composed by Ville Valo.

This is the album that made HIM huge in Europe when their single Join Me In Death was featured in the sci-fi movie The Thirteenth Floor. It reached #1 on German sales charts, going platinum, and is the biggest-selling single in Finnish music history.
